Table 45 AGRICULTURAL COSTS AND YIELDS IN THE HYDERABAD STATE APPENDIX TO CHAPTER THREE FIRST FIVE YEAR PLAN: TARGETS AND ATTAINMENTS Targets and progress in agriculture, during the First Plan Period, are briefly dealt with by the Government publication entitled "First Five Year Plan--Survey of Progress." Relevant portion is quoted. "Under the Grow More Food Compaign, the Agricultural Department aimed at additional production of 6,47,000 tons of cereals and 2,00,000 bales of cotton. The production of cereals during 1954-55 was 24,03,000 tons as against the total production of 13,67,000 tons during 1950-51, the base year of the Plan. Thus there was an increase of 10,36,000 tons of cereals during 1954-56 alone as against the targetfed production of 6,47,000 tons. The planned extra production has not only been achieved a year ahead of the plan but it has by far exceeded the target. Regarding cotton, in 1954-55, 1,48,000 bales of cotton was achieved over the figure for 1950-51. The additional acreage that has been brought under the plough during 1954-55 when compared to the base year 1950-51 are: Rice 6,38,000 acres, Jowar 21,03,000 acres, Bajra 6,23,00 acres, Maize 1,08,000 acres and other cereals 3,01,000 acres. Thus the total additional acreage ploughed was 40,29,00 acres. The figures for increase in production during 1954-55 over the base year 1950-51 are: Rice 2,52,000 tons, Jowar 6,18,000 tons, Wheat 41,000 tons, Bajra 64,000 tons, Maize 13,000 tons, and other cereals 48,000 tons.
